Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The practical study-period is a part of the exchange program in Physiotherapy. The practical studies take place in different health facilities. The practical study- period is 6 weeks.

The student participates in ordinary physiotherapeutic activities carried out at different levels of health services.

The course emphasizes integration of theory and practice to develop physiotherapy-specific competence. The focus is on adapting the professional activity to new context. Previous clinical experiences and how physiotherapeutic principles were applied is central.

An authorized Physiotherapist will supervise the students.

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge:

The student...

  • has knowledge about the Norwegian Health care system
  • has broad knowledge of factors that can promote and inhibit movement development, learning and control, and what significance this has for function and functional change in relevant patient groups
  • has a broad knowledge of conditions that have a constructive and destructive effect on the body, and the importance of meaningful activity and participation in society
  • can justify rationale for assessment of patients within health care
  • can plan, implement, evaluate and adjust measures in consultation with the patient and next of kin

Skills:

The student...

  • can apply and reflect on different body expressions and perspectives on the body, health and illness with respect and empathy in the meeting with patients
  • can select and accurately apply appropriate assessment techniques/tools
  • can apply relevant physiotherapeutic approaches with clarity, precision, security, truthfulness and respect in examination and treatment

The course is open only to students from institutions with which the programme has an exchange agreement with.

Teaching methods

The clinical placement can take place on various arenas in the specialized care or rehabilitation units under supervision of an authorized Physiotherapist. The student will participate in various tasks in the daily running of the Physiotherapy department.

Within the first two weeks, the student must hand in a document that shows his/her goals for the clinical placement. A teacher from the Physiotherapy school will make a visit during the placement period and the student will be asked to carry out an assessment and a treatment session of his/her choice.

The clinical supervisor and the student fill in the assessment form. The contact teacher is responsible for the final assessment of practical studies.

Assessment

To successfully pass the clinical placement the student must have reached the learning outcome for the course and have been present for 90% of the placement period.

The practical training is assessed as pass/fail after a final assessment of the student's performance during the practical training period. To pass the practical training, the student must reach the learning outcomes for the course and meet the 90% attendance requirement.
