ØBR116 Accounting Systems with Insights into Sustainability Reporting

Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

This course is part of the requirements of the accounting program and follows the Norwegian Recommended Plan, Bachelor in Business Administration - Accountant specialisation. Together with ØBR114 and ØBR118, the course covers the requirements for the profiling subjects Bookkeeping in Recommended plan, Bachelor in economics and administration - Accountant specialisation.

The learning outcomes of the course shall at a minimum cover three core topics:

  • The Accountants Regulations provide insight into the accountant’s role and good accounting practices, the Risk Management Regulations, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and data protection rules.
  • Accounting Organization provides insight into corporate governance, organizational structure, and internal control.
  • Business Understanding provides an overview, from an accountant’s perspective, of different types of business activities.

In addition, students acquire knowledge of the bookkeeping regulations and insights into sustainability reporting.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The candidate...

  • has knowledge of the Public Accountant Act with regulations, good accounting practices, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and the ethical rules for accountants
  • has knowledge of the fundamental bookkeeping principles in the Bookkeeping Act and bookkeeping best practices, including other provisions in the Bookkeeping Act and the Accounting Act
  • is familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the board, managing director, and auditor in a company, and understands the characteristics of different sectors - private, public, and non-profit
  • understands the characteristics of different industries and types of businesses and their impact on governance and control
  • is familiar with the requirements for accounting firms’ routines according to the Risk Management Regulations and data protection rules
  • knows the most central business routines, as well as requirements for security and general controls in the organization
  • has knowledge of business models and business understanding, adapted to today’s digital and AI-driven enterprises, as well as sustainability reporting

Skills

The candidate...

  • can reflect on organizational relationships in connection with the course’s various regulations in today’s digital and sustainable organizations
  • can analyze routines and internal control according to COSO/COSO2, apply relevant regulations (including the Risk Management Regulations and the Anti-Money Laundering Act), propose improvement measures, and discuss practical issues related to the client’s operationalization of accounting routines, documentation, compliance with obligations, and assessment of risk and materiality
  • can evaluate appropriate organization of data collection and accounting functions to ensure desired quality and efficiency through good routines and internal control
  • can assess risk and risk-based approaches in both client and own operations, including conducting risk analyses and risk management
  • can analyze different industries and types of businesses and assess their impact on governance, control, and financial management

  • has insight into relevant professional and ethical issues in accounting
  • can discuss and communicate practical issues related to the client’s operationalization of accounting routines, documentation, compliance with obligations, and assessment of risk and materiality
  • can discuss various roles and responsibilities of auditors, advisors, controllers, and accountants
  • can discuss and reflect on organization and internal control in organizations with regard to digitalization and sustainability reporting

Recommended previous knowledge

The course builds on BØA117 Financial accounting with analysis or equivalent knowledge.

Teaching methods

Lectures, guest lectures and case discussions.

Compulsory learning activities

2 mandatory learning activities: 1 written and 1 oral.

Approved learning activities are valid in the examination semester and 3 following semesters.

Assessment

Individual written school exam 4 hours.

The time and place for the exam will be announced on Studentweb. Exams can be held on a digital exam system.

Grade scale A-F, where F is fail.
