SIK502 Introduction to Fire Prevention
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of Fire Safety Engineering, with case studies forming a central part the course. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to respond comprehensively to stakeholder needs by identifying the target audience, selecting appropriate types of information, and ensuring the required level of accuracy. Students will develop skills in professional report writing and in delivering presentations tailored to different audiences.

Knowledge

- knows how fires affect the society locally, nationally and internationally
- knows central fires that have led to changes in fire prevention and regulations
- knows about performance-based and prescriptive fire safety solutions
- Knows about risk reducing measures and how to assess the effect of these
- knows the research and development in the field of fire safety in general
- knows about documentation requirements and how to address this in expert reports (Analysis reports).
Skills
The student…
- Can use fire dynamics when reasoning for fire protection solutions or when discussing challenges with design
- can develop computer models based on fire dynamic theory, such as flame height, heat transfer, radiation and mass flow
- can apply knowledge and relevant results from research and development for fire prevention measures and justify their choices using modelling
- can report their findings and results, both written and oral, to a professional audience
- can make use of fire risk matrices when discussing fire prevention and effect
- can explain fire prevention theory to peers and laymen.

Teaching methods
This is an online course based on educational videos, self-studies, and digital teamwork. The videos will be available throughout the course.
Compulsory learning activities
To enter the final exam, students need to have an approved draft of the case report.
Assessment
The assessment consists of two parts:
- A case study report, 70 % of the final mark
- Digital presentation with oral examination, 30 % of the final mark
The students must pass both assignments to receive a course grade.
Graded scale from A to E for pass and F for fail.
