BIO139 Project in Biomedical Laboratory Science

Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

A project will be specified and should be implemented under the guidance of an supervisor from the department. Typically, this is a laboratory project within the field of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences.

Applicants should know that only Biomedical Laboratory Science students from collaborating institutions from which Western Norway University of Applied Sciences have internship exchange agreements can apply, and the number of students each semester is limited and depending on available supervisors.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course the student should have attained the following learning outcomes, defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

  • Familiar with relevant methods and working practices relating to research and development within the field of biomedical laboratory sciences.
  • Present the research field and data obtained in a scientific report.
  • Through an oral presentation present the project with scientific background and a critically present the results from the work in which the student has participated.

Skills

  • Under supervision, be able to plan and execute a biomedical laboratory science project, both independently and in teams.
  • Collect and analyze the results critically and reflectively.

General competence:

  • Able to update and translate the knowledge and skills into practical solutions through contact with relevant academic communities and practice fields.
  • Show reflective, ethical and environmental insight in accordance with relevant guidelines.

Entry requirements

At least 120 study points (ECTS) in the field of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences or similar subjects.

Teaching methods

Will depend on the type of project, but typically supervised laboratory practice.

Normally, two students are working together on the project.

Oral presentations and communication of results to the research group within given deadlines.

Compulsory learning activities

One written scientific report and one oral presentation of the research project

Assessment

Semester project.

Grading scale is pass or fail.
