BIO152 Practical Training in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The course consists of six weeks of practical training at medical laboratories localized at Haukeland University Hospital. Depending on the capacity at the medical laboratories, the practice period will cover some of the following disciplines: clinical chemistry, histology, cytology, immunology, hematology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, medical genetics and cancer genomics.
Applicants should know that only Biomedical Laboratory Science students from collaborating institutions from which Western Norway University of Applied Sciences have mutual internship exchange agreements, can apply. The number of students each semester is limited and depending on the hospital's capacity for supervision (maximum two (2) students/semester). There should be an equal amount of students that are taken into internships at both collaborating institutions, each year.

On completion of this topic the student will be able to:

- Explain the principle and clinical importance of the selected analyzes and techniques
- Describe quality assurance and safety aspects
Skills:
- Perform the most central analyzes in the laboratories with good laboratory standards
- Handle equipment and device used in the laboratories correctly
- Validate results

- Reflect on professional practice in an interdisciplinary context
- Reflect on personal development, including ethical awareness
Entry requirements
All exams from second year of the Bachelor program in Biomedical Laboratory Science study should be passed.
Target group is students in the 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science.
