Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

The course is mandatory and is part of the masters program's 4th semester.

The course is gathering-based with 3 gatherings, each lasting 2 days. There will also be some digital meetings between the gatherings. In this course the students also participate in two researchgroups at HVL. In addition to the physical gatherings, students will be invited to participate in research group meetings at other times than the scheduled gatherings.

Through participation in the two research groups, students gain insight into early childhood education research design, empirical investigations and analysis of these, and relevant research literature related to the research groups.

Furthermore, the subject involves students carrying out a limited empirical work, and they are required to familiarize themselves with the relevant research literature and complete an assignment related to this. The subject also includes various forms of dissemination of research.

The subject is available to international students with sufficient prerequisites.

Teaching methods

Compulsory learning activities

Individual learning portfolio.

The learning portfolio consists of 4 elements.

Guidelines will be given at the start of semester.

Those who do not have the compulsory learning portfolio approved will have one more chance to accomplish this.

Approved learning portfolio is valid for two (2) years after approval.

Attendance is mandatory, and students must be present for at least 80% of the sessions to qualify for the exam.

Assessment

Exam portfolio.

The exam portfolio consists of a continuation of the elements in the learning portfolio. T

The texts in the portfolio should have approximately the same scope and be a total of 6000-7000 words.

Guidelines for the portfolio will be given at the start of the semester.

Grades are given on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.

For those who do not pass, the same portfolio can be resubmitted for evaluation after revision within 2 years.
