RADP5 Clinical Practice - Advanced Patient Care
Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The practical study-period is a part of the ERASMUS program, an exchange program for the Bachelor degree in Radiography. The program consists of the theoretical subject RAD320 (7,5 ECTS) Behavioral and Professional Aspects of Patient Care in Radiography, RADP5 (7,5 ECTS) the clinical period, in addition to FHSUR300 (3 ECTS) The Norwegian Health Care System in an International Perspective.
Learning Outcome
A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge:
The student;
- has broad knowledge of anatomy, physiology, molecular biology and pathology in all organ systems and how these are presented with diagnostic imaging modalities
- is familiar with relevant legislation and regulations for drug use, including guidelines for documentation and handling of nonconformities
- has broad knowledge in physics, apparatus theory, imaging, recording techniques and safety related to conventional X-ray, CT and MRI
- is familiar with physics, apparatus theory, imaging and recording techniques related to other areas such as radiotherapy, ultrasound, nuclear medicine / PET, intervention and mammography
Skills:
The student;
- can apply professional knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to achieve good diagnostic image quality
- can assess the patient's clinical condition and adapt diagnostic imaging to the individual patient
- can master the preparation and administration of topical medicinal products
- can apply professional knowledge in physics and apparatus to assess the justification of and optimize an imaging examination
- can master patient observation and relevant procedures to provide individualized care to patients
- can assess risk and identify deterioration in the patient's condition, complications of drug use and can implement necessary emergency medical measures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- can assess the risk of adverse events for the patient, next of kin and staff and know methods for following this up systematically within radiographic practice
- can apply up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations and guidelines in their service
General competence:
The student;
- can plan and perform evidence-based radiography, as well as systematically assess the quality of work as a basis for safe diagnostics and treatment
- has insight into and can contribute to knowledge development in the field of medical imaging and imaging
- can plan, carry out and assess diagnostic imaging procedures based on referral, eligibility and the patient's clinical condition, independently and in interdisciplinary collaboration
- can communicate, guide and advise on the justification and safeguarding of radiation protection, including the patient's right to co-opting
- can plan and carry out relevant projects, as well as document and disseminate professional knowledge
Entry requirements
The course is open only to students from institutions with which the programme has an into agreement with.
Regular students in the Bachelor Radiography degree must have passed the first and second year of study and the practical training courses RADP1, RADP2, RADP3, and RADP4.

Teaching methods
Clinical practice (external)
In this practical course, a study week consists of 40 hours. Of these, 30 hours are directly related to patient-oriented work. The remaining 10 hours are dedicated to mandatory learning activities and self-study.
It is possible to arrange up to one (1) study day related to the exam assignment in the course RAD320.
- During the practical training, the student is supervised by a radiographer in diagnostic imaging departments, or a radiation therapist in the radiotherapy department
- The student has the right to regular supervision and feedback
- The student is followed up by the contact teacher

Assessment
Assessment meetings are conducted in the middle and at the end of the practical training period. The student, the practice supervisor, and the contact teacher participate in the midterm meeting. The student and the practice supervisor participate in the final meeting. The contact teacher attends the final meeting when necessary, and this must be agreed upon well in advance.
The practice supervisor and the student complete an assessment form. Practice supervisors make a recommendation of pass or fail. The practice teacher is responsible for the final assessment of the practical training.
Practical training is assessed as pass/fail following a final evaluation of the student’s performance during the placement period. To pass the practical training, the student must achieve the learning outcomes for the course and meet the requirement of 90% attendance.
Absence exceeding 10% will result in all or parts of the practical training period having to be repeated.
If there is doubt as to whether the student will achieve the learning outcomes and pass the practical training, and this doubt arises before the student has completed half of the practical training period, the student shall receive written notification. The notification shall specify what the student has not mastered and which requirements must be met in order to pass the practical training course.
New practical training: No new assessment is arranged in a practical training course. Failure in practical training results in an adjusted study progression, whereby the entire practical training period must be completed together with the next cohort.
