WPE101 Wild Pedagogies and Ecophilosophy in Outdoor Education

Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

This micro course builds on the Norwegian tradition of Friluftsliv (Outdoor Life) in a pedagogical context. Outdoor Life (Friluftsliv), combined with Ecophilosophy and Wild Pedagogies are the basic elements in this micro course. An aim is to experience meaningful ways to develop the human-nature relationship and how this can be a foundation for a sustainable future.

The micro course (5 days) provides additional qualifications for students in teacher education, pre-school teacher education, physical education, and environmental studies. Successful completion of the course qualifies for 2 ECTS credits.

The course is structured around one day of introductory lectures and discussions, followed by different outdoor activities with reflections. Outdoor activities will be carried out together with Norwegian students in pre-school teacher education. Activities might vary according to the weather.

Learning Outcome

After completion of the course the student will have acquired the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of pedagogical perspectives in friluftsliv (outdoor life)
  • has knowledge of some basic concepts in ecophilosophy
  • has knowledge of the intentions and main aspects in wild pedagogies
  • can update his/her knowledge of pedagogy in outdoor education

Skills

The student

  • can apply wild pedagogies and ecophilosphy in oudoor education
  • is familiar with some variations of harvesting from nature
  • can adhere to norms and values in the Norwegian tradition of friluftsliv (outdoor life)

General competence

The student

  • can reflect on different approaches to outdoor education
  • can identify key factors for developing the human-nature relationship
  • can reflect on how friluftsliv (outdoor life) can play a role in environmental awareness and sustainable development

Teaching methods

Compulsory learning activities

  • Participation in lectures and practical activities
  • Participation in discussions and reflections on pedagogies and perspectives in outdoor education

The obligatory assignments must be completed and approved in order for students to attend the exam.

Assessment

Individual oral exam in English, 15 minutes last day of the microcourse (Friday, week 10). Part of total 100%.

Grading scale: Pass/Fail.
