Course description for academic year 2026/2027
Contents and structure
The course provides basic knowledge on the responsibilities, role and tasks of the HRM function in the management and leadership of organizations.
The teaching emphasizes the requirements of the HR function as the process owner and provides knowledge of relevant methods and tools. The main focus will be on the tasks for which the HR function is responsible, aimed at ensuring that the organization achieves its objectives through the sustainable management of human resources.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
After completing the course the student has knowledge about:
- key themes and challenges within the field of HRM and personnel management
- the role of the HR/personnel function in the organization and as contributor to the process of value creation
- sustainable management of the human resources of an organization
- the Norwegian model of working life as a framework for HRM/personnel work
- relevant laws and regulations for HRM work
- central theories, methods and tools connected to different HR-processes in an organization, including:
- recruitment
- prevention and follow-up of health problems and sick leave
- development of a safe and good working environment
- conflict management
- strategic competence development
- implementation of change and downsizing processes
Skills
The student should be able to:
- Apply professional knowledge to practical and theoretical issues
- Identify needs and plan improvements within HR work
- Develop the ability for critical thinking based on relevant discussions of HR topics
- Demonstrate teamwork and interpersonal skills required to work effectively in organizations
- Apply HRM concepts in broader organizational, national, and international contexts
- Solve problems and dilemmas related to various HR situations
- Produce and deliver professional HR presentations
- Communicate clearly and manage time and deadlines effectively
General Competence
The course aims to enable the student to:
- Identify and select valid information sources on the HR topics discussed
- Communicate key subject matter within HRM both orally and in writing
- Demonstrate a mature knowledge and understanding of HR practices
