Fjords and Glaciers

Semester programme

Fjords and Glaciers is a course for you who love nature and outdoor life. During the course you will learn more about the Norwegian tradition of friluftsliv in a pedagogical context, environmental issues, Norwegian traditions, and nature`s impact on cultural life in Norway.

The course is interdisciplinary and consists of nature studies and culture studies on top of outdoor life (the Norwegian tradition of friluftsliv). The didactics of outdoor life, the philosophy of outdoor life and the link between outdoor life and environmental issues are the basic elements of the course.


Outdoor activities are the starting point for all methods in use throughout the course. You will learn about:

  • How friluftsliv can be used in a pedagogical setting
  • How man effect nature
  • How we have used nature troughout history

Through excursions, students will experience the typical landscape of western Norway, its fauna and flora, and will learn how this landscape was formed and modified.

This course requires some specific clothes and equipment.

You will have five days practice in a outdoor school and maybe also some days in kindergarten, primary or secondary school or in other institutions where outdoor activities are utilized.
