Bikram Singh Bhatia

Dr. (Capt.) Bikram Singh Bhatia is an Associate Professor at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Norway. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Maritime Affairs from the World Maritime University (WMU), Sweden, and a B.Sc. from the University of Mumbai.

Before joining academia, Dr. Bhatia spent 16 years working both at sea and ashore. Drawing on this experience, his research focuses on bridging the gap between maritime policy, research, and practice, particularly in relation to living and working conditions at sea.

He has collaborated on research projects with organisations including the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Seafarers’ Trust, the European Transport Federation (ETF), and the Officers Union of International Seamen (OUIS). His research on hours of work and rest regulations has informed discussions at international maritime forums and contributed to policy reviews at the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Placing seafarers at the centre of his research, Dr. Bhatia is committed to advancing knowledge and policy that promote humane and sustainable working conditions in the global maritime industry.
