Before taking a digital written exam

As a general rule, you are personally responsible for ensuring that you have a suitable laptop for the exam.

You are personally responsible for your equipment, for having the necessary software installed and for having a power supply (charger) for your computer.

Before the day of the exam, the following must be installed and tested on the computer you will be using:

Extra time will not be granted for technical issues that delay the start of an exam if these were caused by failing to go through the above checklist.

Username and password

You log into a digital exam in WISEflow with your usual HVL username and password (login via Feide). If you can log into Canvas, everything is as it should be. You can write down your username and password if you are not sure if you will remember them on the day of the exam.

Contact IT-hjelpen@hvl.no if something is not working.

Familiarise yourself with WISEflow before the exam

Before the exam, we strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with how WISEflow and FLOWlock work. The better you know the exam software before the day of the exam, the more you can concentrate on the content of your answer paper.

You will find the DEMOexam at the bottom of your homepage in WISEflow. You can take the DEMOexam as many times as you like.

Log into WISEflow

  • FLOWassign demonstrates how file uploading works. This is needed for written exams taken via the Internet, home exams and for submitting assignments.
  • FLOWmulti demonstrates an interactive exam and includes multiple choice questions, picture exercises and text.
  • FLOWlock demonstrates an exam involving long essays.

More tips for anyone who will take an exam in FLOWlock. (in norwegian)

Using the FLOWlock browser

Log into WISEflow with your usual HVL username and password. Click on the relevant exam, then on “Start FLOWlock”. If other programs are open, you will be asked to close them.

A countdown window showing how long it is until the start of the exam automatically pops up on your screen. The countdown window should be visible on your screen at least 10 minutes before the exam start time. When the countdown reaches zero, the window will change to a new login. Enter the password that the invigilator gives you in order to activate the exam.

Once you have entered the password, you will go straight into a text editor. This is where you will write your answer. Your candidate number will be registered automatically.

It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the text editor before the day of the exam by trying out the DEMOexam. Also check out tips about functions and shortcut keys in FLOWlock (in norwegian). The text editor has a range of functions that allow you to insert simple tables, headings, change font and colour and create simple drawings.

Type your answer

Once you have started typing your answer, it will be automatically and continuously saved in WISEflow. You can choose between Norwegian Bokmål or Norwegian Nynorsk spellcheck by clicking on the abc icon in the toolbar. If a word has been misspelled, it will be highlighted with a red underline. You can left-click or right-click on the word to bring up suggestions for the correct word. Use this at your own discretion!

In the overview window at the right, you can see a list of previously saved versions. If the Internet connection is lost during the exam, you will receive a message about this. You can then continue writing in the text editor, but you must save your answer locally to your computer. When the Internet connection is restored, your answer will automatically be saved in WISEflow again. Contact the invigilator if the Internet is lost for more than two minutes.

At the top right, you will always be able to see how much time is left until the end of the exam.

If you need to submit drawings, models, etc., you can take a photo of the sheet with your webcam. You can insert the photo into your answer by clicking on the double arrows or dragging the photo into the text. See the guidelines on how to use appendix tools such as a webcam or drawing tool here. You can practice using the webcam and drawing tool in the demo exam.
