Excellent and radical interdisciplinary research

How can research contribute to solving complex societal challenges?

Six research initiatives at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) are generating new knowledge through groundbreaking research and radical interdisciplinary collaboration. Together, they bring expertise from health, technology, education, and sustainability to tackle complex societal challenges.

Excellent and radical interdisciplinary research

Researchers are investigating whether hydrogen can be produced directly from seawater using sunlight and advanced materials. The goal is to make green hydrogen production simpler through a photochemical reactor.

By combining expertise from different fields with new technologies, researchers are working to improve stroke rehabilitation and help people regain function after stroke.

Many pregnant migrant women are at greater risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Researchers are developing knowledge to support more equitable maternity care.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping software development. Researchers in this project are investigating what this means for the workplace and for the education of future software developers.

About the initiative

  • Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is building research environments with the potential to achieve international excellence, attract external funding, and deliver research with significant scientific and societal impact.
  • Bringing together researchers from different disciplines, the projects address complex challenges and help lay the groundwork for future national and international research and innovation initiatives.
  • Each research environment receives NOK 6 million over three years.
