PPUA-PR1-16 Teaching Practice 1. year

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

Teaching practice gives the candidate the opportunity to try out and develop their role as a teacher. This is done through an interaction between theoretical knowledge, practical experiences and didactic reflection together with the teacher in charge of teaching practice.

During the year, the candidate will have 150 hours of supervised practice, this placement can be at the student's place of work. Candidates use the initial 10 hours to observe.

In addition to classroom/workshop teaching the candidate may participate in work such as staff and faculty meetings, thematic work, meetings with parents and pupils, excursions, etc.

The practical placement location must be approved by the University College and may include years 5-10 of primary and lower secondary school, upper secondary school or vocational studies in secondary and adult education institutions.

Candidates with an academic background in the arts can spend up to 50 per cent of their practical training in "culture schools" ("kulturskolen").

The first year of study will focus on the teacher's role and the school as an organisation. The systematic development of these is key.

In the second semester, the candidate will plan, implement and evaluate a multidisciplinary development project combining education, didactics and practice; this can be at the student's own school.

Practical information:

Practical placements can be implemented as an intensive period (e.g. 6 weeks) or in smaller periods throughout the year.  A minimum of 50 per cent of the teaching practice must be in the spring semester in order to carry out the R&D assignment.

The student creates an individual teaching practice plan together with the teaching practice teacher/school. This must be approved by HSH.

Students must have teaching practice in general studies/subjects they have competence in and in line with the didactic profile for which they have been accepted at PPU.

Course requirements

The student must have completed their teaching practice in collaboration with an approved supervisor and subject teacher and obtained approval of the practice plan and report.

The student will also participate in supervision meetings with HSH and the teaching practice teacher. This can be completed in either the first or second year of the programme.
