ING1023 Introduction to Engineering Experience and Working Methods

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

Introductory course consists of five parts. The first four components: introduction to science theory, introduction to text handling and spreadsheet, quality concept, standardization and project work (teamwork). The last component is an introduction within their field, mechanical engineering, fire protection and HSE-engieering and students with vocational training.

The course shall give all students a view on philosophy of science, text processing and spreadsheet mathematics, learning skills, projects, quality concepts and standardization. The course has a special focus on communication. The purpose is to develop students` skills for verbal and written communication with professionals in different disciplines, different cultures and at all levels, in Norwegian and English.

For QHSE- and fire protection engineering students, the course will have focus specifically on fire phenomenon and the social consequences of fire incidents. The course includes an introduction in the most common forms of active and passive fire protection and the importance of accident prevention  and the construction of health, safety and security systems.

Mechanical engineering students will become familiar with selected topics in mechanical engineering, for example: typical oil and gas fields solutions, relevant vessels for offshore operations, use of remotely operated underwater vehicles and divers, installation of pipelines, computer aided modeling of mechanical components in 3D.This topic is demonstrated by plant tours and disassembling of mechanical objects.

Main themes for students in Electrical engieneering for students with vocational training, are information gathering and cooperation, language and communication processes, written presentation with focus on technical documentation and business correspondence with emphasis on formalities, ethics, stylistics and analysis of target groups.

Students work together in a project that focuses on a selected topic within the field of study. They will write and present  project documentation, attend demonstrations and perform laboratory work

Learning Outcome

-Knowledge:

The students

  • Can take employment in the engineering profession and embrace the role of an engineer in society and working life.
  • Have knowledge that provides the basis to assess technology, both in historical and future oriented perspective.
  • Are acquainted to scientific working methods and have basic knowledge about the project as a method of operation, including organization, execution and documentation.
  • Are familiar with the basic principles of effective study techniques.
  • Can explain basic knowledge of selected technical topics, depending of aera of specialization. For Y-vei: communication process, formwork, syntax, grammar, linguistic, stylistic and graphic instruments in English and Norwegian.

-Skills

The students can

  • Can indicate engineering-problems, identify necessary information and ensure the quality of information, as a basis for problem solving.
  • Know basic processes of innovation and innovative thinking with regard to project work.
  • Can distinguish written from verbal expressions and use language as a communication tool.

-General qualification:

The students:

  • Are conscious of the environmental and ethical consequences of technical solutions.
  • Knows how to share their knowledge and experience with others, written and verbal, in English and Norwegian, and are able to work well in team.
  • Are capable of the organization, conception and timing, individually and in cooperation with others.

Assessment

Part 1: Written exam, 3 hour, accounts for 60 % of the final grade

Part 2: Project, accounts for 40 % of the final grade

Both parts must be passed.

Grade A-E/ passed; F/failed
