NAB2015 Methods for Nautical Science

Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

The students receive a thorough introduction to social science research methods. Both qualitative and quantitative research approaches and methods are studied. Among the qualitative data collection methods that are covered are interviews and focus groups. Within quantitative methods, we look closer into probability sampling and the preconditions for making valid conclusions on a population bases on a sample survey. Descriptive statistics, testing hypothesis and Statistical Methods for comparing two means will be outlined. The course contains exercises where computer tools (Excel) are used to analyze data and research problems relevant for the bachelor degree in Nautical science.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

Have an understanding of the different steps in a research process.

Acquire knowledge about quantitative and qualitative research designs.

Acquire knowledge about quantitative and qualitative sampling techniques.

Skills:

Can define research questions and knows how to limit these, and to define relevant concepts and problems.

Can reflect upon the possibilities for generalization, as well as discuss problems connected to validity and reliability, sources of errors, and misinterpretations in empirically based studies.

Can select methodic approaches to empirical analyses of research problems.

Can use and make conclusions from basic statistical and qualitative methods of analysis.

Can use and be comfortable with relevant computer tools in order to carry out in practice basic analyses based on empirical data.

General Qualifications:
