Course description for academic year 2018/2019

Contents and structure

  • Descriptive statistics: populations and samples, measures of central tendency, measure of dispersion as well as measure of covariance. 
  • Probability calculations and combinatorics: Conditional and unconditional probabilities, tree diagrams, dependence and independence.
  • Stochastic variables, expected values and variance. Simultaneous probability distributions.
  • Confidence Intervals and different types of hypothesis testing; t-test, chi-square test etc.
  • Regression analysis: Linear regression analysis with hypothesis test of ¿ as well as prediction.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student:

  • Has knowledge about probability theory and combinatorics and how to use it.
  • Knows what stochastic variables, expected values and variance are.
  • Is familiar with different kinds of probability distributions, such as the normal distribution, the binomial distribution, chi-square distribution etc..
  • Knows the central limit theorem and its significance.
  • Has basic skills in probability calculations and combinatorics, knows the difference between conditional and unconditional probabilities and knows the difference between dependent and independent events. 

Skills:

The student:

  • Is able to use basic methods to analyze and describe data. 
  • Is able to use probability theory.
  • Is able to estimate simultaneous probabilities and covariance.
  • Is able to calculate different types of confidence intervals for different kinds of data.
  • Is able to carry out hypothesis tests on various data.
  • Is able to do a linear regression and carry out a hypothesis test on ¿ in the regression equation as well as calculate prediction intervals.

 

General competence:

The student knows how to use the content of this course as basis for other subjects.
