ELE135 Industrial Instrumentation with LabVIEW

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The subject covers the most common components and measurements found in process monitoring and control as well as LabVIEW used for process data acquisition, manipulation, presentation and generation.

Contents

  • Introduction to the content of measurement systems in industrial processes, including process control and data acquisition
  • P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) with the relations between measurements and process equipment such as pumps and valves
  • An overview of common processes and their corresponding measurements and instruments, such as pressure, temperature, flow and level (plus instrument functionality)
  • Explosion safety and reliability
  • Basic graphical programming
  • Variables, structures, arrays, clusters
  • Producer/consumer structure
  • Data in and out via external equipment (DAQ)

Process control with LabVIEW

Learning Outcome

The candidate has an overview of industrial control and supervision in addition to programming strategies for graphical programming.

The candidate is able to participate in the selection of instrumentation solutions for an industrial process.

The candidate is able to perform programming in LabVIEW.

The candidate is able to participate in planning, commissioning and operation of an industrial instrumentation system

Recommended previous knowledge

The students are assumed to have prerequisites similar to the following subjects:

  • ELE100/ELE141 Electric Basics 1
  • ELE101/ELE142 Electric Basics 2
  • ELE102 Computer technologies and programming

Compulsory learning activities

Four laboratory exercises, where three must be approved. The coursework requirements are valid for three following semesters

Assessment

Written exam, 5 hours. Grades from A to F, where F is not passed.

Examination support material

PC which is not connected to a network., all written and printed aids, any calculator.
