MET206 Advanced Control Systems Engineering

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The course covers the basic and the introduction of more advanced principles of modeling, simulation, analysis and design of control systems. The course adresses topics from classical control systems such as dynamical modeling, stability, optimization and tuning of PID controllers for (SISO = Single-Input-Single-Output) systems and topics from more advanced (MIMO = Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) systems based on state-space and discrete systems to solve actual challenges in the fields of automation, electronics and power systems.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

At the end of the course the candidate has knowledge of the mathematical description, analysis and design of continuous and discrete processes based on classical modelling, more advanced systems based on state-space and optimization.

Skills

At the end of the course, the candidate can apply principles of design, control, optimization and stability analysis and can perform quality evaluations of existent control systems. The candidate can participate in research and development activities,

Competence

The candidate can communicate basic information related to theories, issues and solutions in physics and classical control theory. The candidate¿ understands the role of the engineer within the technological development in society.

Entry requirements

Completed bachelor grad.

None

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory work, exercises by using PC and application software.

Compulsory learning activities

5 compulsory assignments, 2 laboratory works. Mandatory attendance at the laboratory works.

Accepted mandatory assignments are valid within 3 semesters following the approval term.

Assessment

3 hours written exam. The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
