• Acoustic navigational systems.
• Earth magnetisme, magnetic compass and other compasses

 

Pracitcal information:

The subject covers relevant IMO requirements stated in STCW78 found in tables A-II/1 and A-II/2. This course is in combination with the courses NAB1026 Navigation I and NABxxxx Navigation III the foundation for course diploma for ARPA, ECDIS and AIS.

This course in combination with NAB1026 Practical Navigation I, NABxxxx Navigation III and NAB3010 Operational Management are the foundation for the BRM course diploma.

The student must get hold of norwegian chart no. 21 & 23 before the vourse starts.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

• has thorough knowledge of navigation systems use, mode of operation, accuracy and limitations.
• knows the development work so he/she is able to update his/her knowledge in the discipline.
• can make a position fix for a ship by using terrestrial navigation technics at  a coastal voyage 
• has thorough knowledge of International Regelations for Preventing Collisions At Sea (COLREG) and use of signals
• Knows how to keep a safe navigational watch, including keeping of deck log book
• has basic knowledge about the impact the enviroment has on ship's maneuvering ability
• has knowledge of nautical publications , ship reporting systems and the principles for piloting
• has thorough knowledge about chart projections and geodetical datums
• has thorough knowledge about passage planning in coastal waters and other areas with heavy traffic

Skills

The student

• can evaluate navigation systems mode of operation, accuracy limitations and performance 
• can utilize knowledge of chart, navigation systems, COLREG,standards for watch keeping and keeping of deck log book at practical and teoretical problem in planning, monitoring and executing of a voyage, based on justified choices
• can, at simulator,under influence of different enviromental forces, demonstrate skills in manoeuvering and ship handling 
• can use nautical publication to obtain information for reporting systems, pilotage and tidal conditions
• can interact in a bridge team work

Competence:

The student

• can by use of knowledge of navigation systems, COLREG, Standards of watchkeeping, chart and other nautical publications, plan and carry out a safe voyage while influenced by variating enviroment forces

Teaching methods

Lectures, chart work and assignments, simulator exercises.

Yes.

Assessment

Practical exam will be held in the simulator. Weight 30 %.Grade: A-E/passed; F/failed.

Written exam, 5 hrs., may be conducted electronically. Weight 70 %. Grade: A-E/passed; F/failed.
