SYKHB2033 Nosology, Pathology and Pharmacology with focus on Municipal Health Care and Mental Health

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

This course will enable the student to acquire knowledge and skills in relation to nosology, pathology and pharmacology through illnesses that require medical, geriatric and psychiatric treatment. These are important complementary subjects enabling the student to perform professionally justifiable nursing as regards patients and users.

Teaching may take place during the afternoon/evening.

Learning Outcome

In Nosology:

Knowledge

The Student:

  • Has knowledge of pathological processes in the body.
  • Has knowledge of causes, symptoms, treatment and prognosis in connection with medical diagnosis, gerontology and geriatric illnesses.
  • Has knowledge of diseases/illnesses and treatment regarding children 
  • Has knowledge of mapping and diagnostics.
  • Has knowledge of possible correlations and causes of the development of mental illnesses based on patient/user knowledge and theoretical knowledge.
  • Has knowledge of different forms of understanding of mental illnesses.
  • Has knowledge of central forms of treatment, based on conversation, milieu therapy and medication.
  • Has knowledge of central child psychiatric states and methods of diagnostics and treatment.
  • Has knowledge of risk factors for suicide, the dynamics of suicide and assessment of warning signs.

Skills:                                                                  

The Student:

  • Is able to use knowledge from medical, geriatric and psychiatric subjects.
  • Is able to make choices derived from professional considerations.

In Pharmacology:

Knowledge

The Student:

  • Has knowledge of different drug groups and their indication for use, effect and side effect.
  • Has knowledge of interactions and consequences of misuse.
  • Has knowledge of precautions in terms of preventing the development of addiction.
  • Has knowledge of dosage and the extra precaution involved giving medicaments to children and the elderly.
  • Has knowledge of drug calculations.

Skills:

The Student:

  • Is able to expound on effects and side effects of medicamental treatment.
  • Is able to carry out security procedures when managing drugs and providing medicamental treatment.
  • Is able to use guidelines and recommendations for drug management.
  • Is familiar with drug calculations.

General Competence Applies to both Nosology and Pharmacology:

The Student:

  • Is able to use medical terminology.
  • Possesses the necessary understanding of nosology, pathophysiology and pharmacology for practising professionally justifiable nursing within medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics and psychiatry.

Entry requirements

Passed subjects SYKHB1021 and SYKHB1031, approved compulsory work related to SYKHB1022 and SYKHB1032.

Teaching methods

Focus on student active learning methods. The following working methods may be used:  compulsory work/assignment, individual and group tutorials, self-tuition, reflection, group work, demonstrations, skills training, simulations, oral presentation, digital learning tools, classmate response, self-evaluation, seminars, research and evidence based teaching, lectures.

Assessment

Graded marks. Written exam, 4 hours.
