BCA201D Artistic Expression and Practice  in Communities 1 - Dance in Context

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

This subject informs of dance and the art of dance in historical perspectives and in present day context. Through this course you also gain knowledge of dance traditions and -techniques. Performing dance in simple forms is emphasized. 

Learning Outcome

Knowledge 

The student:

  • Will know of different historical traditions and artistic expressions of dance up till present day
  • Will know of how Dance links to the history of Music, Visual Arts, Theatre and Drama
  • Will know of performative strategies in different genres of Dance

Skills 

The student:

  • Can perform simple and historically based dances and explain the context 
  • Can teach simple danceforms rooted in historical context
  • Can use simple dance-shapes and their performative strategies as part of a creative and community related project 

General competence

The student:

  • Can plan, lead and guide in creative projects for children, young persons and/or other amateurs, by using historically based dance and movement as part of the work. This can include folkdances and/or social dances 

Entry requirements

None

Recommended previous knowledge

Experience of physical body work, such as dance, physical education, sports and/or experience with other body-cultures. Experience with Drama.

Teaching methods

Practical work with the use of dance-training, lectures, tutoring/guidance, groupwork and written tasks. 

Compulsory learning activities

  • Active participation in practical workshops, lectures and groupwork 
  • Presentation of one (1) group-project 
  • Written assignments

Assessment

Practical group exam.

Grading A - F.

Examination support material

All printed and written support material allowed, including video-material from internet.

Technical equipment such as light and sound for stage, film and/or video camera-work.
