BSS5 Global Health and Cultural Awareness in Nursing

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

This course consists of two interconnected parts: global health and Cultural awareness in nursing. As professional nurses we are committed to deliver health care in a compassionate, efficient, and culturally competent way. Care is the most basic aspects of human existence and culture has a fundamental impact on identity and on the experience of health and illness. Furthermore different socio-economic, cultural, political and structural factors as well as individual characteristics influence health and health care. The course will focus on the major global health challenges and discuss the importance of culture in the experience of health and illness

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge: The student...

  • has knowledge of the major global health challenges and how these impact on nursing care.
  • has knowledge on cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity and cultural competence.

Skills: The student...

  • can compare, contrast and analyse information on nursing, nursing education and practice in different countries, with the view to enhance their nursing practice and contribute to the development of individual cultural competence.

General competence: The student...

  • has insight into and understands the major global health challenges and how these impact on nursing care.
  • has insight into the importance of culture for the experience of health and illness and for nursing care.
  • has insight into the impact of political priorities on health care.
  • has insight into the impact of migration on health and the utilisation of health care services

Entry requirements

Admission to bachelor in Nursing at HVL and incoming exchange students from partner institutions.

Norwegian students must have passed 2nd year's courses and clinical placements

Teaching methods

The topic of global health comprise the following: 1. The contexts of global health challenges: - Global policies: WHO, The Sustainable Development  goals  - Care for mother and child - Care for people with chronic illnesses and infectious diseases 3.Current topics of comparative interest in nursing.

- Lectures

- Study groups

- Workshops with teachers based on study groups

- Panel debates and plenary discussions

- Group work on chosen cases

Compulsory learning activities

  • The study groups prepare questions for lecturers on health and health care issues related to their chosen cases related to the UN`s Sustainable Development Goals
  • Group work on chosen cases based on topics taught in the module

Mandatory assignments are valid 2 semesters following the semester of instruction and approval.

Assessment

Oral exam Each group gets 20 minutes for oral presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions. The group can decide the presentation form, but all group members must participate. 2 examiners will assess the exam.If no exchange students take part in the module the exam can be presented in norwegian

The grading scale used is Passed / not passed

Assessment results will be announced the following day on Studentweb For students who do not pass the exam a new individual exam will be arranged at the beginning of the following term.
