FRIW101 Experiential Education and Friluftsliv
Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
The course explores experiential learning, teacher role in the outdoors and outdoor education in the Norwegian school. The course is build up around two multi-day excursions and several day excursions. Along the course, the students will move from participants to leading, and facilitating, the learning of their fellow students.
Experiential learning explores experiential learning as a teaching method theoretically and practical. After some introductory lectures the students will reflect over learning in the outdoors in a multiday-excursion.
Teacher role explores teaching theories of experiential learning and looks at practical implications for leaders of learning in the outdoors. After some group work and seminars, the students will design learning situations for each other on day excursions.
Outdoor education in Norwegian school is about putting experiential learning in a school context. The students will also make comparisons to their countries curriculum. This part of the course ends up in the students leading a day of learning outside the classroom for a local school
The course finishes with a multi-day excursion focusing on coastal friluftsliv and traditions. The students design and lead learning situations individually or in small groups.
Learning Outcome
After completion of the course Experiential Learning and Friluftsliv the candidate will have acquired the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general compentency:
Knowledge
The candidate:
- has knowledge about Norwegian outdoor education traditions and outdoor education in Norwegian school curriculum
- has knowledge about experiential learning and facilitations as methods in outdoor education
- has knowledge about children’s friluftsliv and natures impact on children’s development and learning
Skills
The candidate:
- can use pedagogic theory and didactic models to plan, lead and evaluate learning in outdoor education
- can adapt different teaching methods and teaching styles dependent on the situations demand
- can facilitate learning through use of landscape
General compentence
The candidate:
- can reflect on own and others pedagogic practise and show self-awareness in a teaching role
Recommended previous knowledge
Be prepared for overnight excursions in tent and be able to carry a backpack with own equipment on excursions.
Teaching methods
The teaching and learning methods are varied and will include excursions, lectures, seminars, group- and individual work. The subject matter will as far as possible be integrated and experienced through practical teaching. On trips and excursions, methodological considerations will play a central role, together with a high level of personal ability and mastery of skills in outdoor activities. The students will be involved in planning, executing and evaluating the excursions.
Compulsory learning activities
To achieve the skill of using pedagogic theory and didactic models to plan, lead and evaluate learning in outdoor education as well as adapt different teaching methods and teaching styles dependent on the situations demand and facilitate learning through use of landscape, the students will work in groups planning, implementing and evaluate outdoor education for a Norwegian school class.
Assessment
Digital home exam on a given topic. Graded from A-F (A as the best).
