Contents and structure

The course provides an introduction to important geophysical concepts:

  • Electrical resistivity methods
  • Electromagnetic methods (in particularly georadar)
  • Applied Seismology
  • Seismic refraction surveying
  • Seismic reflection surveying
  • Geomagnetic methods
  • Gravity methods
  • Geophysical fieldwork using electrical resistivity methods, georadar and refraction seismic.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • Students will develop an understanding of various geophysical methods and their application in geological investigations.

Skills

  • Students will know how to interpret geophysical data collected using gravity and geomagnetic methods, reflection- and refraction seismics, electrical resistivity methods and georadar.
  • Students will be able to determine which geophysical method is best suited for various geological investigations and challenges.
  • Students will learn how to plan and carry out geophysical fieldwork using georadar, 2D electrical surveying techniques and refraction seismic.
  • Students will know how to process, interpret and present measurements collected with georadar, 2D electrical surveying techniques and refraction seismic.

General qualifications

  • Students will obtain a thorough understanding of a range of the most commonly applied geophysical methods.
  • Students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to plan and carry out geophysical fieldwork, conduct subsequent data processing and present a thorough interpretation of the collected data.
