ING4005 Fire Risk Assessment

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The course shall give the students a thorough understanding of assessment of fire risks. Underlying causes of fires shall be identified with regards to people, material assets and the environment. Measures (barriers) to prevent fires and the escalation of fires is included along with cost analysis. The course deals with the use of national and international standards for conducting qualitative and quantitative fire risk analyzis. Assessment of different criteria for acceptance of risk and uncertainty and sensitivity analyzis is included in the course.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • can explain and evaluate the potential harm of fires to people, property and the environment with cost analyzes
  • can discuss and assess barrier philosophy to reduce risk
  • can have an overview and can analyze typical causes of fires
  • can have an overview of factors affecting the vulnerability of fire protection measures, including human, organizational and technical measures
  • has detailed knowledge of probability theory, risk and vulnerability analysis and Bayesian philosophy
  • can identify factors that increase risk of fire
  • can describe national and international regulations and standards for assessing fire risk

Skills

The candidate:

  • can understand situations and conditions that provide increased fire risk
  • can manage work related to recognized methods for estimating fire risk
  • can perform preliminary hazard analysis and use event- and fault tree analysis
  • can estimate the probability / frequency of fires
  • can evaluate barriers and propose risk reducing measures
  • can use creative techniques and identify relevant fire scenarios

General competence

The candidate:

  • can analyze fire risk under complex conditions where people, material assets or the environment are / could be involved
  • can choose appropriate acceptance criteria, models and methods for risk analysis
  • has the understanding and knowledge of methodology in order to work with other types of risk
  • can present the results of risk analysis in an understandable way for the client and the public

Teaching methods

The course will be based on collections of lectures, exercises, problem-based learning and case studies. Project assignments.

Compulsory learning activities

None.

Assessment

Part 1: Written exam, 4 hours, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.

Part 2: Portfolio, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.

Both parts must be passed.

Grade:  A - E / passed;  F / failed.
