Contents and structure

Module 4, English Didactics is offered as one of four specialized modules in the course. This module takes place in the third semester of the Master's programme.

Module 4 part 2, English didactics, focuses on the topic:

Researching English as a foreign language (EFL) didactics.

This module will only be taken by students specializing in English. An important part of the reading for this module consists of self-defined literature, which will reflect the topic chosen by the student as the subject of the dissertation in Module 5.

• study of examples of research in EFL didactics in the school context
• aims and limitation of EFL didactics research
• data collection and analysis in EFL didactics research.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

On completion of the module, students should have acquired

• critical insight into research carried out within a range of aspects of EFL didactics for school-aged learners
• knowledge of the stages and methods involved in research typically carried out in central aspects of EFL didactics.

Skills

On completion of the module, students should be able to

• identify what characterizes good research practice in EFL didactics
• put into practice basic principles of research in the field of language didactics
• put in practice stages and methods salient to research in language didactics.

General competence

On completion of the module, students should

• be able to carry out good action research and other research projects in their own classrooms
• be able to evaluate research projects carried out by others
• be a resource person in their future schools, to support good action research and other research projects carried out by other teachers.

Teaching methods

Work on the module will take the form of group work, lectures, and seminars. Students are expected to come prepared for each class.

Compulsory learning activities

In this course, the learning of English requires interaction with fellow students and instructors. It is expected that students attend all teaching sessions, sharing the responsibility for carrying out learning activities, thus contributing to a fruitful learning environment. The reading list may be supplemented with material given in the teaching sessions, and such material can also be tested at the exam. The course demands a certain amount of self-study, as the entire reading list cannot be taught in class. All teaching is given in English.

Assessment

Oral examination, 45 minutes.

The examination will take the form of an oral presentation followed by discussion related to a central theme from the component.

Guidelines for the presentations will be provided at the beginning of the module.

Grades A to F are used in assessment.
