Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The course provides a further introduction and specialization in the thinking and perspectives of the social sciences. Central subjects are legal, political and organizational frameworks for the patient/client and the practice of nursing. Social, structural and individual factors of importance for the performance of roles are emphasized.

Furthermore preparation for professional roles by showing the challenges and opportunities inherent to the profession and health care are emphasized. The course includes a focus on public health and health promotion.

Practical information:

Teaching may take place during the afternoon/evening.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The Student:

  • Has knowledge of the thinking and perspectives of the social sciences
  • Has knowledge of the interaction between different administrative- and treatment levels
  • Has knowledge of the nurses´ educational function and its importance for health
  • Has knowledge of the nursing profession in society
  • Has knowledge of the factors affecting the role performance
  • Has knowledge of the nurses´ function in the patient care pathway and treatment lines in the health services
  • Has knowledge of the nurses´ ethical responsibilities in society
  • Has knowledge of the nurses´ leading and administrative function

Skills

The Student:

  • Is able to use knowledge of the perspectives and the thinking of the social sciences that are relevant for nursing
  • Is able to reflect on issues relating to interaction
  • Is able to apply educational knowledge to promote health

General Competence:

The Student:

  • Is able to exchange viewpoints on social development, the health service and nursing profession and how political constraints may affect nursing practice
  • Shows insight into factors that affect health
  • Has insight into public health interventions that promote health and prevent disease
  • Can discuss the relationship between ethics and sound professional nursing

Entry requirements

Passed subjects SYKHB1021, SYKHB1031, SYKHB1022, SYKHB1032, SYKHB2023, SYKHB2033, SYKHB2041, and the practical periods 1 and 2.

Recommended previous knowledge

All preceding courses.

Teaching methods

Focus on student active learning methods. The following working methods may be used:  compulsory work/assignment, individual and group tutorials, self-tuition, reflection, group work, working with projects, simulations, oral presentation, digital learning tools, classmate response, self-evaluation, seminars, research and evidence based teaching, lectures.

Compulsory learning activities

  • 12-15 mandatory seminar days
  • Requirement 1: Written assignment in groups. The theme is the nurses´ role when patients request therapies not included in the existing health care system, 2000 words (+/- 10%)
  • Requirement 2: Group work: Interprofessional Collaborative Learning (IPL), including 3 virtual collaborative meetings between different student professions and an individual note, 750 words (+/- 10%).
  • Requirement 3: Written assignment about social ethics, in groups, 1500 words (+/- 10%).

 

All requirements must be approved, and the student must to a necessary degree participate in mandatory seminar days, to be qualified to take the exam.

Assessment

Graded marks. Home exam, length is specified in the subject plan.

All printed and written supporting materials are allowed.
