NAB1023 Basic Mathematics and Physics Y-vei

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

Basic mechanics, thermo physics, geometrical optics, gas laws, arithmetic, algebra, equations and inequalities, trigonometry, geometry and functions.

Learning Outcome

 - Knowledge:

The students should be able to explain calculations by use of the motion equations for constant acceleration. They should be able to use Newton's laws, and describe friction, ramps, work and energy. They should be able to explain the 1st Main sentence, temperature, heat capacity, specific heat capacity and specific melting heat and vaporization. The students should know of the equation of state for ideal gases, refraction in prisms and total reflection. They should have basic knowledge of fractions, parenthesis rules, factorization, potencies, logarithms, and how to use a formula. The students should be able to explain first and second degree equations with one or two unknown factors, simple inequalities, the definition of trigonometric functions for angles less than 180°, triangle calculations, linear functions, equations for straight lines, proportionality, inversely proportionality and quadric functions.

 

- Skills:

The students should be able to analyze a problem, applying force vectors by using components, and use Newton's laws of motion in solving the problem. They should be able to set up an equation of given and received heat for a system of objects, and know the most important theories. The students should master basic mathematics and be able to solve simple equations and inequalities. They should know how to calculate specific heat capacity and specific melting heat and vaporization. The students should be able to perform basic calculations using fractions, parenthesis rules, factorization and potencies. They should be able to use a formula correctly in calculations.

 

- General Qualifications:

The students should be able to write mathematics correctly by using mathematic symbols and names. They should have insight in basic concepts and models in Physics and Mathematics, and be able to explain these to others. The students should have the necessary prerequisites for future studies within mathematics, physics and nautical subjects.

Entry requirements

None.

Recommended previous knowledge

 Passed VG1 and VG2 and craft certificate as Able Seaman or Fisherman.

Compulsory learning activities

  • Two mandatory 2-hours tests during the semester, both must be passed in order to take the final exam. 
  • Three mandatory written assignments, all three must be passed in order to take the final exam.
