NAB3025 Medical Care

Contents and structure

First Aid, circulatory failure, hygiene on board, CPR, oxygen therapy, acute illnesses, head/neck/back injuries, mental reactions and stress, resources on board, Radio Medico, alcohol and drug abuse, gynecology, pregnancy and child birth, dental care, death at sea, nursing care, medical care of rescued persons, hypothermia, keeping medical records, diseases, medicines and medical equipment, intravenous treatment, wounds, minor surgical treatment, practical exercises, tropical diseases, vaccinations and acute abdominal conditions.

Practical information:

The course is taught by HVL.  Exercises may be conducted at another location by another institution/course provider.

Learning Outcome

- Knowledge:

The students should be able to describe symptoms and treatment and diseases and injuries as per STCW 78 as amended, table A-VI/4-2. They should be familiar with relevant publications and regulations. The students should have an understanding of the time it can take before sick or injures persons can be brought ashore, and must be very familiar with Radio Medico.

 

- Skills:

The students should be able read the symptoms and decide further action. They should be able to give medical care to sick and injured persons when on board a vessel. The students should be able to care for patients on board, and provide medical care in accordance with the patient's needs. They should be able to participate in coordinated efforts for medical assistance to ships. The students should be able to use relevant publications.

 

- General Qualifications:

The students should have sufficient knowledge and skills to be responsible for the medical treatment onboard ships, as required in STCW 78 as amended, table A-VI/4-2. They should be able to maintain the ship¿s hospital according to regulations and best practice. The students should be able to reflect upon relevant ethical issues and they should be able to communicate with relevant organizations ashore regarding the patient and the patient's need for further treatment. This course also ensures that the requirements regarding first aid and medical treatment inSTCW 78 as amended, tables A-II/1 and A-II/2, are met.

Entry requirements

The students must have successfully completed NAB3014 STCW Advanced Safety Training.

Lectures, group work and practical exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

100 % mandatory attendance and practical exercises.

Assessment

Written exam, 3 hrs. Grading scale A-F.
