Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

The course provides an introduction in risk analysis and how to carry out the analysis of safety risk regarding to major accidents.

  • Risk analyse subject in risk and safety management.
  • Risk as a phenomenon.
  • Risk acceptance criteria and the assessment of risk.
  • Risk analysis process.
  • The most usual analytical methods.
  • Identification of hazards, threats and unexpected events.
  • Analysis of events proceeding, including root cause analysis, consequence analysis and reliability analysis.
  • The assessment of uncertainty in risk analysis.
  • Presentation of risk.

In addition, the course provides an introduction to the analysis of health and environmental risk:

  • Health risks, epidemiology, toxicology and systematic health risk analysis.
  • Environmental risk, transport in ground, water and air, systematic environmental risk analysis.

Learning Outcome

 -Knowledge:

The student

  • Can explain risk analysis and the function risk analysis has, regarding to risk and safety management.
  • Knows the term risk and how to evaluate the risk.
  • Has knowledge of risk analysis process to analyze safety risk.
  • Has knowledge of the risk analysis methods and how to use them regarding to hazards, threats and unexpected events and can analyze the course of events.
  • Has knowledge of factors that contribute to uncertainty in risk analysis.
  • Has knowledge of how to carry out the analysis of health and environmental risks.
  • Can explain epidemiology, toxicology connected to health risks and how pollution is distributed on ground, in water and air as environmental risk.

The student can

  • Carry out safety risk analysis.
  • Use the most usual methods of risk analysis.
  • Identify hazards, threats and unexpected events in an analysis object.
  • Analyze events through root cause analysis and consequence analysis.
  • Analyze system reliability using reliability analysis.
  • Consider the risk of an analysis object and uncertainty of risk analysis.
  • Carry out simple analysis of health and environment risk.

-General qualification:

The student:

  • Knows the risk analysis process and the various steps this process.
  • Can identify solutions regarding the use of risk analysis and is able to discuss the consequences.
  • Can reflect the benefit of risk analysis
  • Can schedule and carry out, single or in team, different time consuming tasks and evaluate this work critically.
  • Can present the knowlegde and the results of risk analysis.

Compulsory learning activities

Assignment.

Assessment

Part 1: Portfolio, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.

Part 2: Written exam, 3 hours, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.

Both parts must be passed.

Grade:  A - E / passed;  F / failed.

Written exam: Simple calculator: Allowed calculator is Casio fx-82 (all varieties: ES, ES Plus, EX, Solar etc.)
