FØS8111 Aquaculture economy

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

This course will provide students with broad knowledge of the theories, information and assessments that form the economic basis for the aquaculture indistry and different aquaculture businesses in the industry. This course has a special focus on profitability and circular economy within the aquaculture indistry. Students will learn to perform economic assessments and use economic business data and information to make solid decisions with economic consequensis. Students will use models and tools to plan and carry out different economic analysis. The course aims to enable students to master professional tools that are in use, or may be in use, if the aquaculture industry. The course should also help students reflect critically on current and future economic challenges and opportunities aquaculture businesses that compete regionally, nationally and globally.

This course is number 1 in a sequence of a total of 4 courses in the project BLÅ ÅKER.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student has:

  • broad knowledge of key topics, theories, issues, processes, tools and methods related to how aquaculture businesses and the aquaculture industry;
    • plans, organizes and controls its economic activities
    • analyzes its profit and make decisions to maintain profitability
    • can adapt and use different tools related to circular economy
  • knowledge of current and emerging research and issues that are relevant for the economic performance of the aquaculture industry and the aquaculture business enteties
  • knowledge of the history, tradition, uniqueness and place of the aquaculture industry in a digital age and for a green transformation

 

Skills

The student can:

  • analyze and discuss practical issues in the light of theories and models in the economic literature
  • can justify their choices and be able to find, evaluate and refer to relevant information and subject matter and present this in the light of an issue within an economic framework 
  • can master professional economic tools and techniques, including digital tools and tools for convertion to increased focus on circular economy

 

General competence

Students:

  • has the ability to critically reflect on the use of theories and models to master the economic challenges and economic opportunities that the aquaculture businesses face and make arg
  • can convey and discuss economic theory, models and analyzes both in writing and orally
  • can make independent reflections on ethical, environmental and legal challenges related to key issues within the economic field
  • knows about innovation and innovation processes from an economic perspective and with particular emphasis on a circular economic perspective

Recommended previous knowledge

Work experience from the aquaculture business can be useful

Teaching methods

Meetings in Ryfylke combined with online activities between meetings. Lectures, self study, group assignments, discussions and case analysis.

Compulsory learning activities

Two work requirements - one oral individual work requirement and one written work requirement in groups of 2 - 3 students

Assessment

Homewxam over 10 days in groups of 2 - 3 students - 60 %

Oral individual exam 20 minutes - 40 %

Grade scale A - F
