BCA201M Artistic Expression and Practice in Communities 1 - Music

Contents and structure

In this course the student develops specific knowledge in the field of music of which functions music has in situated cultures and societies and how styles/genres of music develop and manifest. Such knowledges feed into creative workshops, where students will be active composers and improvisors in a variety of styles, sound materials and modalities. Students develop through this their creative abilities, their musicianship and their ability to run workshops containing participant-creative music activities. 

Academic content: 

• Creative and aesthetical activities in workshop contexts 
• Ethical and didactical challenges for the music activity leader 
• Norwegian folk music and dance tradition 
• Selected music history themes  
• Writing with different aims for different target groups 
• Introduction to music technology 

Included in the course is 1 week module in the rural city of Voss at "The Ole Bull Academy" covering the subject folk music and dance. Teaching and accommodation is free. Travel and served food is at the expense of the student and will cost approximately 700,- NOK 

Students must have smart phone or equipment for video and photo captivation at their disposal for documentation purposes. 

Learning Outcome

Knowledge 

The student:  

• Has knowledge of Norwegian folk music and dance tradition 
• Has knowledge of selected music history themes 
• Has research-based and practice-based knowledge of ethical and didactical challenges 
• Has knowledge of writing for different purposes and target groups  

Skills 

The student:  

• Can perform and lead a varied repertoire of Norwegian folk music and dancing and activities 
• Can initiate, organize and lead/facilitate music activities for different contexts. 
• Create music material, and facilitate and document music performance for different arenas 
• Can assess analytically and critically which function music has in situated societies and communities  
• Can improvise and create music with voice, music instrument(s), and digital applications and can work out simple arrangements 

General competence 

The student:  

• Has listening experience and terminology knowledge of different cultures’ musics 
• Has experienced different analogue and digital tools for music activities and can assess their affordances critically 
• Can reflect upon own role and experiences in different musical and didactical processes and contexts

Teaching methods

Lectures, workshops with practical project work - both individual and in groups, litterature- and discussion seminars, self guided use of online resources, tutoring, musical experimenting / improvising / rehearsing / composing, self-guided litterature studies, online activities. 

Compulsory learning activities

• Active participation is expected and compulsory attendance is a requirement for parts of this course. Which parts this is will be presented in the plan for each semester.
