EVN1011 Present technical challenges for the Maritime industry

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

15 teaching hours with homework (simple) and the opportunity to take an exam

1st block, 2 hours:

  • Review of methods for risk analyzes
  • Evaluation of the safety associated with the new challenges (personnel transfer, search and rescue, rescue equipment, environmental damage)
  • Homework

2nd block, 2 hours:

  • Regular and irregulate waves
  • Motion of modern vessels
  • Homework

3rd block, 2 hours:

  • Assessment of which fuel to choose for modern vessels
  • How to cover the competence needs to operate modern vessels, content in current courses
  • Homework

4th block, 2 hours:

  • Offshore wind and movements of wind turbines
  • Requirements to construction and installation of offshore wind power structures
  • Homework

5th block, 2 hours:

  • Dimensioning of fish cages
  • Dimensioning versus operation of sea cages far out to sea
  • Homework

6th block, 2 hours:

  • Polar Code for operation in polar regions
  • Search and rescue in polar regions
  • Homework

7th block, 3 hours:

  • Review of security of values (cyber security in practice, fire and grounding, the role of insurance companies)
  • How will the authorities follow up on the new challenges facing the maritime industry
  • Summary of the course

Learning Outcome

Knowledge  The students shall have knowledge regarding the challenges posed to the maritime industry with regard to the environment and climate to an extent that they can make decisions on relevant technological actvities.

Skills  The students must have sufficient knowledge so that they can participate in a fact-based discussion on technological challenges related to the topic.

General competency The students shall have general competence to understand the technological challenges posed to the maritime industry with regard to the environment and climate.

Entry requirements

Study competence based on having obtained high school diploma from science class.

Teaching methods

Teaching consists of webinars. There will be lectures where students can ask questions and get answers directly. In addition, interaction in a common digital learning platform and one-to-one communication. Simple homework tasks to be discussed in class.

Compulsory learning activities

The student receives a diploma of attendance if three homework assignments have been answered satisfactorily. In order to sit for the exam, three homework assignments must also be answered satisfactorily.

Assessment

Written individual home exam (not compulsory) - 4 hours

Grade: pass / not passed

The student receives a diploma of attendance if three homework assignments have been answered satisfactorily.
