FØS8113 Future sustainable aquaculture

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

The course will give the students broad knowledge of theories, information and assessments that form the basis for today's aquaculture management challenges for the aquaculture industry. The course focuses in particular on sustainability challenges related to feed, lice and localities. The students will learn how to identify administrative assessments and use available data and information to make good decisions (with administrative consequence) in their own organization. The aim of the course is to enable the students to reflect critically on both aquaculture management and sustainability challenges and opportunities in the aquaculture industry.

This course comprises course 3 of a total of 4 courses in the project BLÅ ÅKER.

Learning Outcome

A candidate shall achieve the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, the candidate has:

  • broad knowledge of current aquaculture management/ challenges for the aquaculture industry
  • broad knowledge of current issues, requirements and regulations relevant to the Norwegian aquaculture industry
  • broad knowledge of key sustainability challenges related to, for example, feed, lice and localities

Skills

Upon completion of the course, the candidate can apply different academic perspectives and theoretical approaches to:

  • be able to make decisions that support sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry
  • be able to initiate, and lead good processes for the application of new technology
  • be able to make assessments about the future aquaculture in Norway

 

General competence

Upon completion of the course, the candidate has the competence to:

  • reflect critically on how new technologies will affect the aquaculture industry
  • identify opportunities and challenges that new technologies open up for in the aquaculture industry
  • understand key regulations nationally and internationally that affect development and growth in the aquaculture industry

Recommended previous knowledge

Knowledge of the aquaculture sector could be an advantage

Teaching methods

Sessionbased in Ryfylke combined with online activity between the sessions. Lectures, self-study, group work, discussions and work on case assignments.

Compulsory learning activities

Two work assignments/activities must be approved in order to do the exam

Assessment

Individual home exam over 8 days  - 60 %

Oral exam (20 minutes) in groups of 2 - 3 students - 40 %
