NAB2052 Marine Machinery

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

 Basic knowledge about machinery and engine room systems within the technical ship equipment. This is also seen in relation to a greener maritime industry and maritime cyber security.

Learning Outcome

- Knowledge:

The student

  • knows of how marine motors are built up and how these work
  • has knowledge of the diesel engine systems
  • has knowledge of small, medium and large diesel engines
  • has a thorough knowledge of the operation of vessels and engine installations, and engines run by steam or gas
  • has knowledge of refrigeration systems and hydraulic systems.
  • has knowledge of transition to a greener maritime industry
  • has knowledge of maritime cyber security challenges related to marine machiery and connected equipment

- Skills:

The student

  • are able to do basic bunker calculations
  • can do calculations within refrigeration
  • can carry out hydraulic calculations

- General Qualifications:

The student

  • knows the operating principles of marine power plants and ships' auxiliary machinery
  • has knowledge of marine engineering terminology
  • has competence of marine machiery on management level as described in STCW 78 as Amended, table A-II/2
  • are aware of security measures onboard as required in the ISPS Code
  • can discuss issues related to the green shift in the maritime industry and maritime cyber security challenges with others within the field

Entry requirements

 None.

Recommended previous knowledge

 NAB1001 Physics, NAB2011 Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

Teaching methods

 Lectures, calculations, self studies and possible excursions

Compulsory learning activities

 2 Written assignments, both must be approved in order to take the final exam. 

Assessment

Written exam, 3 hours, accounts for 100 % final grade.

Graded scale A-F.
