Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

This course introduces Visual art as a creative, process oriented and cultural activity. The student will gain experience with varied working methods, design processes and different materials and techniques as well as general insight to art in a historic and innovative perspective. Visual art didactics and environmental issues is an integrated part of this course.

Students with significant experience in visual art may be asked to pass on some of their knowledge and skills to the rest of the class, to prepare them for the second year (the visual art major subject).

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of relevant materials, techniques and tools
  • has basic knowledge of how to handle and maintain tools and materials
  • has basic knowledge of the diversity of local, national and global art forms and cultures,
  • has basic knowledge of relevant didactic issues
  • has basic knowledge of environmental issues in relation to choice of materials and techniques

Skills

The student

  • can use a range of techniques and tools to gain artistic expression
  • can use digital technology as a tool in the artistic practice
  • can use the visual language as a part of the creative process and to communicate ideas

General competence

The student

  • has basic understanding of how visual art and the creative process can challenge one’s senses, engage emotions and activates the body
  • can communicate with peers and professionals using visual art terminology

Teaching methods

Workshops, seminars, lectures, practical work in the studio, both individual and group-based work.

Compulsory learning activities

Material costs for this course is 300 NOK.

  • Course requirement 1: Compulsory attendance is a requirement in all music and group activities
  • Course requirement 2: Presentations of group and field work in class
  • Course requirement 3: Two written assignments, 1000 words each

All course requirements must be passed before the final assessment.

Assessment

Practical examination in groups.

Grading scale: A - F.
