BCA401M Artistic Expression and Practice 1 - Music

Contents and structure

As community artist one needs to develop art practices and express him/herself professionally, artistically and publicly and master both main instrument (or vocal) and other instruments/vocal and technology on a high level. In this course the student will continue to develop towards that goal, by both developing own practices and repertoire, skills needed for playing and singing together with others, as well as music technology skills and knowledge. It is discussed how such art practices and skills form the basis for and can be transferred into multiple workshop possibilities and community art settings

Academic content:

• Main instrument lessons
• Own artistic project
• Band rotation - learn to play the instruments of a rock band (and sing lead vocal)
• Music theory and aural training - step 2

• Ensemble and choir rehearsing and performing
• Music technology

Students must have smart phone or equipment for video and photo captivation at their disposal for documentation purposes.

The current course is linked to BCAPRA1 through certain assignments mentioned in semester plan.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student 

• Has knowledge of rehearsal methods and repertoire for the main instrument/art practice

• Has knowledge of instruments and methods relevant for ensemble workshop delivery and instrumental teaching
• Has knowledge of analogue sound equipment and digital applications for music performance, rehearsal, training and learning
• Has knowledge of the relationship between formal, informal and non-formal teaching and learning in music

Skills

The student

• Can present and perform own art practices artistically and publicly
• Can improve technically on main instrument and through growing aesthetical and relational awareness create personal art expressions
• Can study genres and performers, improvise and apply creative processes into own art practices
• Can play common (rock)band instruments on an accepted level
• Can use the voice in a comprehensible way in different ensembles and learning situations

• Can use music technology and digital tools to enhance expression and communication
• Has developed own aural skills, can discriminate between common building blocks of music and use accepted music theory terminology in all sorts of musical activities

General competence

The student

• Can combine all attained skills and knowledge in a balanced way to improve musical quality in ensembles and in own artistry and when leading activities in community music settings
• Displays ability to act adequately musically and socially - adjust to surroundings, follow, take initiative - in different settings where rehearsal, performance and musicking is happening

Teaching methods

Main instrument lessons, masterclass, lectures, workshops with practical training - both individual and in groups, litterature- and discussion seminars, self-guided use of online resources, tutoring, musical experimenting / improvising / rehearsing / composing, self-guided litterature studies, online activities.

Compulsory learning activities

• Active participation is expected, and compulsory attendance is a requirement for parts of this course. Which parts this is will be presented in the plan for each semester.
• Assignments and tests specified in the semester plan (made available at semester start). These must be assessed as "passed" at given deadlines in order to get access to the exam in this course.

Assessment

Practical examination.

Grading scale: A - F.
