MOØ222 Technology Management 1 and Ethics

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

The knowledge content of this course covers technology management based on organisation theory, theories on leadership and innovation in technology based organizations. In addition, an important part of the course gives an introduction to principles for business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable corporate responsibility (SCR). The course is given in the form of seminars in order to give students personal experience in reading, reflecting on and presenting articles and chapters from the curriculum. Students are expected to participate extensively with presentations and discussions. The students are required to submit one written report.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

On completion of the course students will have advanced knowledge of:

  • theories and principles of organisation, administration and innovation in private and public organisations.
  • principal theories of leadership, management and innovation in technology-based organisations.
  • knowledge production and management in professional organisations.
  • stakeholder theory and principles for business ethics, corporate social responsibility - CSR and SDG.

Skills

On completion of the course students can:

  • carry out data collection with necessary skills for conducting critical research on organisations and management.
  • analyse a private or public organisation with respect to its structure, culture, human relations, technology incorporation, innovation capacity and management.
  • analyse and suggest instruments for ethical behaviour, CSR and SDG in a given organisation.

General Competence

On completion of the course students:

  • can participate in consultancy work in the areas of organisational change, technology management in public and private organizational settings.
  • can communicate relevant topics to both specialists and non-specialists.
  • know when further expertise is necessary, and where it can be found.
  • know relevant conditions under which management is important and under which conditions other variables or explanations should be addressed.
  • know basic theories of professions, professionalization and knowledge-based economies.

Recommended previous knowledge

Courses in organization theory, - management and strategy at the bachelor level

Teaching methods

The most important success factors are self-study and to participate in seminars with presentations from students. Self-study is important in order to benefit from course readings materials and assignments. These will be complemented by traditional lectures with relevant examples in addition to guest lectures with a more practical nature. The course may include presentation and visit to some relevant organizations and one seminar outside HVL.

The course will be taught in Norwegian but may be offered in English, subject to demand and necessity. Assignments and examinations may be submitted in Norwegian or in English.

Compulsory learning activities

Students must complete 2 group assignments:

a) review an article or a book chapter (either on technology management or on ethics and sustainability or combine both topics) and present the summary of the article/book chapter orally.

b) present the outline of own group research project (semesteroppgave) orally and submit the outline of the group research project (semesteroppgave) in written before one may take the exam.

Assessment

Written 5 hours school exam.The written school examination accounts for 60% of the final grade.

One group research report (semesteroppgave) combining both technology management and ethic topics account for 40% of the final grade.

Grading scale is A-F, where F is a fail grade. Students must secure a passing grade in both parts i.e. written school examination and semesteroppgave.
