BCA601M Artistic Expression and Practice in Communities 2 - Music

Contents and structure

In this course the students work towards expressing themselves professionally through the main instrument and lead music ensembles in different ways. Many possibilities of steady income lie in this field, and a lot of these implies the ability to conduct an ensemble in some sort of way, be a versatile enough musician to be able to play and support others and to utilize many related musical skills.

Teaching given will support both leading choirs and bands but will cover common issues that applies to all types of ensembles and multiple levels.

Academic content:

• Main instrument
• Band rotation 2
• Choir conducting and singing
• Band leadership

Students must have smart phone or equipment for video and photo captivation at their disposal for documentation purposes.

Content from this course can be connected to interdisciplinary project in the course "The Arts in Culture and Society 2", which runs parallel to this.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student 

• Has knowledge of relevant repertoire for multiple ensemble types and multiple skill levels within these
• Has knowledge of the human voice
• Has knowledge of how relations and group processes are important premises for developing a learning and performing environment rich of opportunities and potential
• Has knowledge of leader theories applicable for leading community ensembles

Skills

The student 

• Can initiate, motivate, organize and lead ensembles, employ different ways of working, and take initiative in rehearsal processes
• Can display mastery of conductor skills
• Can listen and adapt to other members in an ensemble

• Can use aural skills as means to improve musical quality
• Can display technical skills and understanding of style/genre on main instrument
• Can use own voice and general knowledge of the human voice in diverse ways in choir-activities
• Can produce lead sheets with melody, chords and lyrics to support rehearsal processes

General competence

The student:

• Can express own musical ideas of expression verbally, musically and through conducting
• Can analyse and describe social and musical processes

• Displays ability to incorporate community music ethics in conscious decision-making regarding ensemble leadership issues

Teaching methods

Lectures, workshops with practical project work - both individual and in groups, self-guided use of online resources, supervised group and solo rehearsals, literature studies, discussions, some online activities.

Compulsory learning activities

• Active participation is expected and compulsory attendance is a requirement for parts of this course, which parts this is will be presented in the plan for each semester.
• Assignments mentioned in the semester plan (made available at semester start).

Assessment

Practical examination.

Grading scale: A - F.
