Content and Structure

The Bachelor's thesis should be an in-depth academic work based on a problem from a private or public business or a specialization in a relevant theoretical area.

Bachelor's theses are written in groups of 3-4 students. Groups of 1-2 or more than 4 students may be accepted upon approval of a written application submitted to the course coordinator.

Supervisors and students are responsible for ensuring that the Bachelor's theses are written in accordance with HVL's research ethical guidelines and the requirements for data protection set out in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of July 2018, including a written consent declaration signed by participants in surveys.

Copyright

The Bachelor's thesis is owned by the student and HVL. Therefore, supervisors or others cannot require the student to publish the thesis at libraries, on the internet, or elsewhere, in printed or electronic form, without the candidate's consent and, if applicable, external contacts.

Confidentiality of Bachelor's Theses

If an external partner wishes to keep parts or the entirety of the thesis confidential, a separate agreement is signed between the department and the external party. The department has prepared a document outlining the specifics of confidentiality.

Compulsory learning activities

The following requirements are included:

  • Preliminary project (mandatory assignment in ØMO111)
  • Poster according to a specified template

Content and deadlines are provided by the subject coordinators in the specializations and responsible course instructors.

An approved mandatory assignment in ØMO111 is valid in the examination semester and the following 3 semesters. The poster is only valid in the semester in which the bachelor's thesis is submitted.

Students who have received credit for ØMO111 on the basis of previous education are exempt from the requirement for the preliminary project.

Assessment

Group-based written bachelor thesis is graded separately before the adjusting oral exam. Both the written and oral parts must be passed to pass the course. Grading is conducted by two examiners, one of which is external.

The deadline for submitting the bachelor thesis is published on Studentweb and through the digital examination system, Wiseflow.

The grade for the written bachelor thesis is registered in Wiseflow by the examiners and communicated to the students at least 24 hours before the oral exam.

The final grade for the bachelor theses is identical to the grade shown on the examination protocol for the "adjusting oral exam". All grades are registered by the examiners in Wiseflow. The final grade after the oral exam is individually set for each group member. Grades can be differentiated among group members.

The time and location for the oral exam are provided in Canvas for the various specializations.

The grade for the bachelor thesis can be adjusted up or down by one grade after the oral exam. Grading scale A-F, where F corresponds to failed.

Failed bachelor thesis

Students who have failed the bachelor thesis can submit a new and improved version during the upcoming semester. An improved version can only be submitted once.

Grade appeal

Refer to HVL's guidelines and the form for complaint processing.

If the appeal commission changes the grade of the written bachelor thesis by more than one grade, the members of the new and old commissions shall meet to agree on the grade.
