FE408 Sustainable Energy Transition

Contents and structure

The course is about sustainable transition of the society and the energy system from a societal perspective, and what is needed in terms of achieving such transition. The course looks into sustainable transition using different challenges as a starting point, and uses cases to illustrate it.

Learning Outcome

The course will provide insight into the most important challenges we face with respect to a sustainable transition of the society.

Knowledge

• The student must have knowledge about terms like sustainable development and transition.
• The student must have knowledge about how the term sustainable development can be defined, measured and used at a global, national and local level.
• The student must have knowledge about UNs sustainability goals.
• The student must have knowledge about different conditions for a sustainable transition of the society.
• The student should know the policy instruments the government could use to support sustainable transition of the society.

Skills

• The student must be able to explain the term sustainable development.
• The student must be able to consider the demand for transition of different sectors in the society.
• The student must be able to provide knowledge to central actors about important policy instruments to revise society at different levels.

Competence

• The student must have competence about how society can be changed in order to reach global and national climate- and sustainability goals, and compare these with historical examples.

Recommended previous knowledge

FE401, FE405, FE406, FE410 and FE411

Teaching methods

Lectures, guest lectures, group work, excursion and exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

Participation on excursion. Students who does not participate on the excursion will have to submitt a written work requirement.

Assessment

Individual project assignment with an adjusting oral exam. The project assignment must consist of a total of 5000 words +/- 10 % excluding reference list.

Grading scale A-F, where F represents a fail.

If a student fails on the project assignment, or wants to improve the grade, a new project assignment will have to be delivered.

Examination support material

All in the project assignment, none in the adjusting oral exam.
