Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Our society faces major challenges that require adaptation and change, and which make it important to master projects as a form of work.

The O&G companies must adjust their operations towards the renewable market. The projects in this market are smaller than the traditional oil and gas projects, contain new technologies, and the organizations are smaller. This means that the roles in the projects also change. Planners in such projects must understand the technology, the implementation methodology, and cover several disciplines.

In this course, you gain relevant knowledge and skills within project planning, project management, and establishment, and how a project is carried out to succeed.

The course provides a modern theoretical foundation for the subject area of estimation and planning and focuses on selected areas of application that are considered central to the supplier industry.

The course is divided into 3 main modules:

Module 1: Project Understanding

  • Introduction - Why projects and project management?
  • The management loop: Goal formulation, Planning and Follow-up
  • In general about the early phase
  • Project organisation/Teamwork/Development of teams
  • Communication in a project team – also towards customers
  • Basic contract management
  • Stakeholder management and analysis

Module 2: The Planning Process

  • Planning methods
  • Establishment of plans/level of plans
  • Total and Detailed Planning
  • Scheduling and Resource Planning
  • Estimation of quantity/hours

Module 3: Risk Understanding and Planning Under Uncertainty

  • What characterizes a successful project - success criteria
  • Project implementation models
  • Risk management - risk follow-up in projects
  • Planning under uncertainty

Knowledge

After completing the course, students should have acquired in-depth knowledge of:

  • The conceptual apparatus of the project subject.
  • The project work process from start to finished result.
  • Methods of estimation and planning.
  • Techniques for monitoring time, resource use, and cost use.
  • Risk management practices and tools.
  • Principles of project organization and teamwork.

Skills

After completing the course, students should have the following skills:

  • Define project goals and objectives.
  • Develop detailed project plans.
  • Assess resource needs and manage their allocation effectively.
  • Monitor and control project progress against set baselines.
  • Lead and organize project teams for effective collaboration.
  • Evaluate risks and implement mitigation strategies.

General Competence

After completing the course, the student should have developed a professional attitude where one is able to:

approach academic questions in principle, demonstrate humility towards the complexity of practicing the subject, and exhibit ethical awareness in the application of knowledge within the field.

Recommended previous knowledge

Experience from the supplier industry is an advantage.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work, and plenary reflections.

Compulsory learning activities

Students will work on a semester assignment throughout the course. As a mandatory coursework requirement, students must submit four drafts of the project in Canvas. The project will be conducted in groups of 2-4 participants.

Assessment

The final assessment is a group semester assignment (2-4 participants).

Grading Scale: A-F, where F represents a failing grade.
