KJE303 Separation and Cleaning Technology
Course description for academic year 2025/2026
Contents and structure
The course will provide a fundamental understanding of mass transfer theory with relevant applications. There is a focus on numerical solutions where the student will perform calculations on relevant industrial processes. In addition, the student will acquire experience and skills through demonstrations, a practical laboratory exercise and computer simulations. The course covers molecular diffusion in liquids and gases as well as mechanisms for mass transfer across interphases in countercurrent columns. Processes such as distillation, gas absorption, gas-liquid adsorption, humidification and drying will be studied. In addition, the process of separation of particles using hydrocyclones will be examined.
Learning Outcome
Upon completing the course, the candidate have obtained the following learning outcome defined i terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- can describe which mechanisms that controls mass transfer across interphases
- can describe unit operations which concern mass transfer between different phases
- can explain mode of operation of hydrocyclones
Skills
The student
- can perform calculations of mass transfer in countercurrent columns
- can perform practical work in the laboratory on operation of a continuous distillation process
- has acquired basic skills in the use of HYSYS, a process simulation software
- has the ability to read and understand process schematics (P&ID's and PFD)
- can compose a laboratory journal
- can evaluate uncertainty and sources of error in data
General competence
The student
- is able to work in teams on both practical and written assignments
- can demonstrate areas of use concerning mass transport of components across phase borders to enrich a selected component
Entry requirements
None
Recommended previous knowledge
The candidate should have credits in mathematics, fluid mechanics and physical chemistry.
Teaching methods
Lectures including problem solving. Working in teams. Practical laboratory exercise and instructions when working in the laboratory and with reports. HYSYS, a process simulation software. Mandatory submissions. Demonstrations in the laboratory.
Compulsory learning activities
Laboratory report and three written problem sets of which all need to be approved.
The fulfilled requirements are valid for six semesters (including the semester of which the work requirements were approved).
Assessment
Part 1: A written school exam, 4 hours, accounts for 70 % of the final grade.
Part 2: A group report, accounts for 30 % of the final grade.
If part 2 is not passed, an improved report may be submitted the following semester.
The grading scale is A-F of which F is failed.
Both parts must be passed to pass the course.
