Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

ENG111S provides an introduction to language teaching and subject didactics with a rich and varied selection of texts for both personal and professional growth and for use in teaching at the elementary, lower and upper seconday school level. The course covers the development of one's own language skills, text competence, and productive vocabulary.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of vocabulary acquisition and English structures from sound to text level, as well as insight into cultural conventions for language use
  • has knowledge of different learning arenas, such as digital media
  • has insight into their own language learning, grammatically and phonologically
  • is familiar with songs, rhymes, literature, and other cultural expressions that can be used in teaching children

Skills

The student

  • can use English confidently and functionally and is a good language model for the students
  • can make pupils aware of the structure of language and guide them in their language development, for example through knowledge of contrastive problems
  • can facilitate a safe learning environment with varied, differentiated, and meaningful learning activities rooted in theory and personal experience
  • is aware of their own language learning and can facilitate their own language development

General competence

The student

  • can convey relevant subject matter and communicates in English in a manner appropriate to the target group
  • can reflect on their own learning and practice
  • can work independently and with others to solve identified problems related to learning

Teaching methods

Different working methods are used depending on what is most suitable for the subject matter and level. This applies to both theoretical and practical topics.

  • Lectures
  • Classroom dialogue
  • English as the language of communication in class
  • Problem-based learning in groups or individually
  • Practical work with activities
  • Teacher- and student-led assignments in the program
  • Individual or group supervision
  • ICT is an integral part of the work with the subject components in English where it is natural.

Compulsory learning activities

  • Students must submit and receive guidance on drafts of their term paper
  • An obligatory learning activity in a language component
  • Attendance of at least 70% of the teaching is required, i.e. 70% of all digital meetings and at least 3 of 4 in-person teaching sessions on campus. When absence exceeds 30%, the student will not receive approval for the course, regardless of the reason.

The semester plan will provide more detailed guidelines for the obligatory learning activities, and information will also be provided about supervision and academic requirements. Students are required to familiarise themselves with and comply with the submission deadlines. One compulsory learning activity must be related to academic writing.

The obligatory learning activities must be approved by the course coordinator no later than two weeks before the student can sit the examination. If a compulsory learning activity is assessed as not approved, a reason for this must be given. Students who do not receive approval for an obligatory learning activity will, as far as possible within the set deadlines, be given another attempt in the current semester.

Assessment

  • Part 1: Written exam, 3 hours. Counts for 40% of the final grade.
  • Part 2: Written assignment, 2000 words. Counts for 60% of the final grade.

Grading scale: A-F, where F corresponds to fail.

Both parts must be passed in order to receive a grade in the course. If one part is not passed, that part may be retaken as a new exam.

If the assignment is not passed, it is possible to submit an improved version in the following semester. It is only possible to submit an improved version with the same topic once. After that, an entirely new assignment must be written.
