MKUF503 Interdisiplinary artistic expressions

Course description for academic year 2026/2027

Contents and structure

In the course, students will work through aesthetic learning processes, they will explore various approaches to creativity and aesthetics related to the arts subjects. Through practical work, theoretical exploration, text production, and multimodal expressions, students will gain experience and insights into aesthetic theories, cultural histories, creativity pedagogy and practical work.

Part of the work will be centered around an interdisciplinary artistic project, which, along with the rest of the content in the course, will form the basis for students' reflections on aesthetic theory and creative processes, their uniqueness, application and relevance within the specialized subjects.

The course will be based on current academic and didactic issues, recent research, and development work.

Upon completion of the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of cultural-historical and contemporary aesthetic theories, as well as aesthetic expressions, concepts, and practices
  • has in-depth knowledge of creativity pedagogy and can reflect on creative processes and the use of digital tools both as a form of expression and as mediation in the creative fields
  • has in-depth knowledge of how aesthetic theories and creativity theories can enlighten and relate to didactical work and outreach activities in the arts subjects
  • has in-depth knowledge of relational and participant-based artistic processes

Skills

The student

  • can design and systematically analyze aesthetic and creative learning processes based on their own specialized subjects and in interdisciplinary collaboration with representatives from various art disciplines
  • can use and assess creative phenomena such as improvisation and work competently and actively with idea development as a creative skill in an independent manner
  • can plan, create, and implement interdisciplinary aesthetic projects
  • can critically discuss and reflect on current issues related to aesthetic and creative practices

General Competence

The student

  • can apply knowledge and skills related to aesthetic and creative learning processes in new areas and integrate them into further work in the study
  • can use interdisciplinary methods and digital tools in creative group processes
  • can make use of multimodal expressions such as video and podcasts as a means of communication to introduce, inform, and reflect on one’s own creative work
  • can use knowledge and skills in aesthetics and creativity pedagogy as a basis for innovation and new thinking

Teaching methods

The teaching will be a combination of on-site and online. The work methods in the course will alternate between practical workshops, lectures, group project work, guidance, student presentations and self-study.

Compulsory learning activities

The following mandatory learning activities must be approved for the student to be eligible for the exam:

  • A written assignment focusing on aesthetic theories (individual or in pairs) related to one’s own creative work in the performance project
  • Podcast/videoessay about the performance project in group/individually. extent: maximum ten minutes (group)/ four minutes (individual)
  • Completion of group-tasks related to the performance-project
  • It is mandatory to be present at the on campus sessions and requirements of active participation

If a mandatory learning activity is assessed as not approved, written notification of this will be provided. Students who do not have one or more learning activities approved are offered the opportunity to correct errors and deficiencies (once) or complete an alternative learning activity provided by the instructor. The date for a reattempt must be within the current semester and before the specified deadlines, but no later than two weeks before the exam period begins.

Detailed guidelines for learning activities will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

Assessment

Practical exam.

Practical exam is executed as a performance based on the performance project the student has worked on during the term in group or individual. After the performances the student/s will have a conversation with the examinators.

Extent performance: about 10-15 minutes (group), 3-4 minutes (individual). If small groups the extent will be somewhat reduced. This is done in dialogue between the group of students and course coordinators.

Extent conversation: max 20 minutes.

Grading scale: Pass/Fail.

Postponed/New exam is executed as the ordinary exam.
