MAS219 Engineering Design 2

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Content:

The design process in a systematic approach. Design and selection of mechanical components. Progressing through the preliminary stages of a design process in teams, using written/oral communication in a design project.

In psychological respects, designing is a creative activity that calls for a sound grounding in mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, electrical engineering, production engineering, materials technology, machine elements and design theory, as well as knowledge and experience of the domain of interest. Initiative, resolution, resolution, economic insight, tenacity, optimism and teamwork are qualities that stand all designers in good stead and are indispensable to those in responsible positions.

Students begin a design project and progress through the stages of the design process to the full extend of the manufacturing drawings of the completed project task.

Prerequisites include but are not limited to: Mathematics, statics and dynamics, machine elements, components, 3D-CAD/FEM and material science.

Learning Outcome

knowledge:

  • Understand the impact of various competing factors (e.g. engineering performance, cost, reliability, safety, public interest, environmental concerns, etc.) on the design of a mechanical component or system;

  • Develop a knowledge of standard machine components critical to mechanical engineering design;

  • Understand the systematic process to the design of mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowing the various engineering disciplines to the design of mechanical components and systems;
  • Knowing the standard machine components to apply them critical to mechanical engineering design;
  • Knowing manufacturing options to produce, assemble, disassemble and recycle single machine elements, assemblies and complete Products;
  • Knowing how to communicate the various aspects of the design process, both orally and in writing, to peers and supervisors.

Skills:

  • Apply a systematic process to the design of mechanical components and systems;
  • Apply and synthesize knowledge gained in various engineering disciplines to the design of mechanical components and systems;
  • Use / apply modern computational engineering design and analysis tools as 3D-CAD, Matlab, etc. effectively throughout the design process as needed;
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply mechanics concepts, including stress and strain analysis, failure theories, impact, fatigue, etc., in the design, selection and integration of mechanical components;
  • Apply and relate gained knowledge of manufacturing options to produce, assemble, disassemble and recycle single machine elements, assemblies and complete products;
  • Function effectively as a member of multidisciplinary teams engaged in an engineering design Project;
  • Communicate the various aspects of the design process, both orally and in writing, to peers and supervisors.

General qualification:

  • The students will be able to apply engineering skills learned throughout the course of their engineering studies, work with communication and personal accountability skills developed in general education courses and specify engineering design concepts taught in the capstone sequence.
  • The student will be able to design a project completed alone ( or if assigned in teams), to propose a new design and develop the design specifications for a given overall task.
  • The student will be able to involve a literature reviews, conceptual design, and all necessary analysis.
  • The student will be able to create a final design that includes a full documentation of the design process, a requirements list, evaluation of design variants, results of all engineering analysis, single and assembly drawings.
  • The student will be able to present results by oral presentation, will be able to work in teams with practicing engineers.
