MAS304 Experimental Methods in Marine Technology

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The course introduces experimental methods used for hydrodynamic testing of selected models. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary practical background and knowledge of possibilities and limitations related to experimental methods. They will also learn to perform relevant tests in the towing tank.

  • Introduction to experimental methods in hydrodynamics and the towing tank, MarinLab.
  • Review of scaling methods for hydrodynamic experiments, and repetition of the theory behind resistance and lift
  • Review of different types of sensors and instruments used in the lab.
  • Introduction to modelling currents and waves in the towing tank.
  • Introduction to time series analysis of measurement data in Matlab.
  • Conducting lab experiments in small groups.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student must have the following qualifications:

Knowledge

  • Explain basic concepts in the course.
  • Know experimental methods for measuring dynamic motions (seakeeping) and fluid interaction with an underwater turbine.
  • Knowledge of different measurement techniques.
  • Know the possibilities and limitations associated with scaling and the uncertainty in experimental testing in general.
  • Good understanding of hydrodynamic phenomena.
  • Overview of different types of hydrodynamic model tests and their use.

Skills

  • Design an experiment in the towing tank.
  • The candidate must be able to decide when a measurement result is satisfactory or not, considering the limitations of the experiment.
  • Perform an experiment in the towing tank.
  • Process and analyse time series data from completed experiment.

General competence

  • Reflect on own professional practice, work in groups and write a technical report.

Entry requirements

None.

Recommended previous knowledge

MAS116 Hydrodynamics, MAS220 Basic fluid mechanics

The Marine Technology study program's compulsory marine engineering subjects.

Teaching methods

Lectures, lab exercises - individually and in groups with report writing. Students get access to MarinLab after undergoing a mandatory security round. MATLAB should be installed as an aid for calculations.

Compulsory learning activities

Compulsory preparation and participation in group work and laboratory exercises.

Assessment

Folder

  • Two reports documenting performed laboratory exercises and the results of these.

After an overall assessment, a letter grade is given for the group.

Grade scale A-F, where F is not passed.

Examination support material

Folder assessment, all aids are allowed.
