NABP4005 Cargo Handling II
Course description for academic year 2025/2026
Contents and structure
The subject covers the following topics: Loading and unloading, with a focus on tanker and Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) operations. Handling and planning of cargoes such as gas, oil, and chemicals in accordance with regulations. The student should be able to apply relevant regulations and industry standards such as ISGOTT, SIGTTO, MARPOL Annex I, Annex II, and Annex III, the Timber Code "Code of Safe Practice for Ships Carrying Timber Deck Cargoes," the CSS Code with emphasis on Annex 13, IBC with focus on chemical segregation (USCG Compatibility Chart), GOMO (Guidelines for Offshore Marine Operations), ADR, and the use of the cargo securing program LachCon.
- Gas measurement and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets)
- Calculation of cargo securing (CSS Code Annex 13)
- Segregation of chemicals and advanced knowledge of tankers, meaning chemical-, gas-, and oil tankers
- Ventilation of cargo holds and the use of Mollier hx-diagram
- Practical performance of a series of operations on the cargo simulator relevant to oil tankers
- Use of codes such as GOMO and ADR/RID (land transport of dangerous goods)
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
The student
- shall have broad knowledge regarding loading and unloading of liquid bulk, timber, and general cargo on PSV. The student shall have knowledge of known challenges and hazards related to these cargoes
- should know how to conduct full loading and unloading of oil cargoes on the simulator, taking into account stability, trim, list, safety, shear forces, bending moments, pressure in cargo tanks, and regulations related to oil tankers
- shall have knowledge of relevant regulations for ships carrying chemicals, oil, gas, timber, general cargo, or performing operations on the Norwegian continental shelf (GOMO), as well as be able to update their own knowledge
- should be familiar with research and development work within the field
Skills:
The student
- can apply professional knowledge to practical and theoretical problems and perform extensive calculations within the topics covered in the course, and can make well-founded decisions
- shall have extensive knowledge of tankers and safety relevant to tanker operations, especially oil tankers
- shall be able to find, assess, and reference information and literature necessary for professional practice
- shall be able to master relevant tools, techniques, and terminology within the field
General Competence:
The student
- has theoretical competence in cargo operations for a responsible officer at the operational and management level beyond the requirements set by the STCW 78 Convention with the 2010 Manila Amendments, Table A-II/1 and A-II/2
- can plan and carry out varied work tasks within the subject, individually or as part of a group, in accordance with guidelines and requirements
- can communicate key issues and solutions both in writing and orally, and contribute to the development of good routines and practices

Teaching methods
Lectures, simulator sessions, self-study, and calculation workshops.
Compulsory learning activities
1 clearance test, must be approved.
Mandatory attendance at simulator sessions.
Assessment
Written exam, 5 hours.
