Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The course introduces the discipline of landscape architecture. Landscape architecture is the planning and design of various types of outdoor spaces. This course emphasizes the design of urban environments. Throughout the course a theoretical introduction to basic methods and vocabulary for analysing urban spaces is provided. There will be exercises to practise the students skills in communicating their own ideas visually through hand sketching, physical models and digital design tools.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student know:

- how forms and spaces shape our surroundings and affect us.

- some of the key concepts in Landscape Architecture.

- some elementary design methods for Landscape Architects.

- how to do simple design drawings by hand, and digitally.

Skills

The student should:

- be able to outline and communicate design ideas visually.

- be able to reflect on and evaluate his/her own, and others', work.

- be able to describe architectural qualities in urban parks and spaces.

General competence

The student should:

- have the ability to analyse urban parks and spaces and spatial experiences.

- have the ability to carry out a design process in Landscape Architecture.

Teaching methods

Project work, lectures, exercises, and field trips. Creative work with guidance, both individually and in groups of 3-4.

Compulsory learning activities

The students must participate on the course field trips; 4-6 days in total.

4-6 mandatory learning activities; presentations, seminars, exercises, and a portfolio.

Assessment

Project assignment in groups: exhibition with presentation
